Lieutenant to fill Director of Public Safety Position at OWC

      After ten years with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Brian Shonk will begin his new position in July as the Director of Public Safety with Okaloosa Walton College .  Lt. Shonk started with the Sheriff’s Office in 1995 as a road patrol deputy.  Since that time, Lt. Shonk has progressed to many positions within the Sheriff’s Office; Environmental Enforcement, Traffic Enforcement, Criminal Investigations, Office of Professional Standards, and Lieutenant for Field Services.

In 2001, Lt. Shonk was selected as Employee of the Year and in 2002 was recognized as a finalist in the Florida 2002 Deputy Sheriff of the Year.  Throughout his tenure Lt Shonk has taught various criminal justice college courses and was a TASER and Firearms Training Instructor at Okaloosa Walton College .  In 2003, Lt. Shonk completed his Master of Public Administration Degree at the University of West Florida . 

Sheriff Charlie Morris stated, “I am looking forward to a continuing relationship with the Public Safety Department at Okaloosa Walton College .  Through Brian’s leadership, I strongly believe he will make the Public Safety Department the very best in the State of Florida .  We are very happy for him and his family.
