The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the 1st Judicial Circuit Medical Examiner’s Office has made positive identification via dental records of the human remains recovered on 04/28/2016 at a Fort Walton Beach home as being that of missing person Marie Carlson.
On 04/27/2016, suspect James Ty Flanders, while accompanied by his lawyer, led Sheriff’s Investigators and Prosecutors from the State Attorney’s Office to 714 Revere Ave., where Flanders admitted to killing Carlson and burying her body in his side yard while he resided there. Flanders showed investigators specifically where to look for Carlson’s remains.
On 04/28/2016, after obtaining a warrant, Sheriff’s Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians, along with FDLE Special Agents, Crime Scene Investigators, specialists from the Medical Examiner’s Office and personnel from the State Attorney’s Office exhumed the remains, where they were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Pensacola for positive identification.
Family members have been notified of the positive identification. The manner of death has not yet been concluded by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
