The U.S. Honor Flag arrived in Okaloosa County Saturday night to pay tribute to slain Deputy Bill Myers. It will remain with him until the conclusion of his Memorial Service scheduled for Monday at Northwest Florida State College.
The flag is part of The Honor Network, a non-profit organization that relies on private donations to travel the country to memorialize “those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for their family, community and country.”
The flag arrived at Emerald Coast Funeral Home around 8 p.m. Saturday to honor 64-year old OCSO Deputy Bill Myers. Myers was killed September 22nd after a man he had served a domestic violence injunction in Shalimar shot him multiple times outside an attorney’s office on Plew Avenue. Myers was a 25 –year veteran of the OCSO who had
retired in 2013, but came back to work part-time duty due to his love of the community and strong law enforcement calling.
The U.S. Honor Flag has flown over Ground Zero after September 11th as well as aboard the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program. It was also in Okaloosa County in 2009 to honor OCSO Deputies Skip York and Burt Lopez after they were killed in April of that year while attempting to take a domestic violence suspect into custody near Crestview.
